I know that approximately 3 people care about my favorite albums in 2024. But I take this list pretty seriously. Anytime an artist I like puts out an album during the year, I add it to a playlist. Toward the end of the year I start to pull out my favorites. Some get kicked off the playlist (Sorry, Billie Eilish). The past few days, I have been listening to each album in order to best rank this list.
Wicked Movie Soundtrack
This is ONLY number ten because I listen to the OG soundtrack over the movie soundtrack. Can't help it, I am forever an Idina Menzel fangirl. But I also couldn't NOT include the soundtrack. It was a pop culture phenomena in 2024.
Favorite songs:
The Wizard and I "And I'll stand there with the Wizard/Feeling things I've never felt/And though I'd never show it/ I'd be so happy, I could melt
Dancing Through Life "It's just life, so keep dancing through".
Defying Gravity "I'm through accepting limits/Cause someone says they're so/Some things I cannot change, but 'til I try, I'll never know"
Ariana Grande; Eternal Sunshine
I've always appreciated Ariana Grande's pop hits, but this album was more introspective.
Favorite Songs:
Don't Wanna Break Up Again "But you didn't even try/When you finally did, it was at the wrong time/Won't abandon me again for you and I"
Yes, And? And if you find yourself in a dark situation/Just turn on your light and be like
"Yes, and?"
We Can't Be Friends Me and my truth, we sit in silence
Hozier; Unreal Unearth
Once I heard the song "Too Sweet" I knew I needed to get my hands on the Hozier album. So glad I did. He ended up being one of my top listened to artists this year.
Favorite Songs:
Damage Gets Done Feat Brandi Carlile: One time we would want for nothing/We knew what our love was worth (when we had nothing)/Now we're always missing something (I miss when) I miss when we did not need much
All Things End: And all things end/All that we intend is built on sand/Slips right through our hands/And just knowing/That everything will end/Won't change our plans
First Light: Darkness always finds you either way/It creeps into the corners as the moment fades
Sabrina Carpenter; Short N Sweet
Ah, our little pop star polly pocket. What can I say? I love a pop song. Sabrina is another artist that has blown up (largely thanks to Taylor Swift) and I have a feeling she'll be slinging out pop hits for a while yet.
Favorite Songs:
Please, Please, Please: Whatever devil's inside you, don't let him out tonight
Good Graces: Boy, it's not that complicated/You should stay in my good graces Coincidence: Tryin' to turn the past into the present tense, huh
Fletcher; The Antidote
I've been a Fletcher fan for years and I was so happy when her music blew up a few years ago with "Becky's So Hot". She is such an incredible vocalist, with genuine lyrics.
Favorite Songs:
Two Things Can Be True: You can ignore me in every room and still miss me/And me, two things can be true/He can love you, baby, and baby, I can too
Pretending: As if I'm not what you're waiting for/Like I'm not in your ending/Yeah, for now, we'll both keep on pretending
Maybe I Am: You say I'm ruining my life on purpose/Just because I can/Maybe I, maybe I am
Kris Allen; Pole Vaulter
Kris has been releasing singles on Spotify for a couple of years and I kept waiting for an album to come. This was the year! When I saw him in concert this spring I was reminded just how talented he is. I loved this album.
Favorite Songs:
More Than Ever: I keep hearing that time/Is the enemy of love/But one look in your eyes/Tells me not for us
Different Bridges, Same River: We would rather face the waves alone than see another way/Don't you call it warfare/Cuz we are gettin nowhere
Don't Stop Dancing: You steal the light in every room/But when the darkness finds you/Don't stop/Don't stop dancing
Beyonce; Cowboy Carter
Lemonde is the album that made me a Beyonce fan, and Cowboy Carter is everything I wanted it to be! Collabs, ballads, country, sass.
Favorite Songs:
16 Carriages: Ain't got time to waste, I got art to make/I got love to create on this holy night/They won't dim my light, all these years I fight
II Most Wanted: I'd go wherever you take me, seems kind of crazy
Protector: Even though I know someday you're gonna shine on your own/I will be your projector
Maggie Rogers; Don't Forget Me
Why haven't I seen Maggie Rogers live yet? I always enjoy her work. This album is just so good. The lyrics hit home, and her voice is a sultry folky combo that is perfection.
Favorite Songs:
The Kill: One of these days, I'm gonna wake up fresh/And wipe all the past from my eyes
So Sick of Dreaming: If you think that life without me's like a heart attack/Take a long look in the mirror and be good with that
Don't Forget Me: Take my money, wreck my Sundays/Love me 'til your next somebody/Oh, but promise me that when it's time to leave/Oh, won't you promise me that when it's time to leave/Don't forget me
Gracie Abrams; The Secret of Us
I first knew of Gracie when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo in 2021. Her album Good Riddance came out in 2023 and it was one of my favorites for that year, but my appreciation for her and her music has grown even more since then. It's really fun to see her blow up into a big artist- and also slightly sad because I will probably never get. to see her on her own tour with how crazy it is to get tickets. But, I was able to see her open for Taylor in Toronto and had the best time singing along.
Favorite songs:
Risk: God, I'm jumping in the deep end/It's more fun to swim in/Heard the risk is drownin', but I'm gonna take it/I'm gonna take it
I Love You, I'm Sorry: I tend to laugh whenever I'm sad/I stare at the crash, it actually works
Us: Do you miss us, us?/I felt it, you held it/Do you miss us, us?/Wonder if you regret the secret/ Of us, us
Taylor Swift; Tortured Poets Department
I am sure you are shocked. But truly, I was shocked that Taylor released a new album this year. I really didn't expect to get new music until the Era's Tour was finished. But we got an incredible, 31 song album. It is some of her best songwriting. To me, this album is a great mixture of what I love about Reputation and what I love about Folklore/Evermore. I know it's a great album when I have a hard time picking my favorite songs, and that is definitely the case with TTPD. My favorite songs change all the time. With every new listen, I appreciate something I had not caught before.
Favorite Songs (Currently)
So Long London: I stopped CPR, after all it's no use/The spirit was gone, we would never come to/And I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free
The Black Dog: And it kills me/I just don't understand/How you don't miss me/In the shower/And remember/How my rain-soaked body was shaking/Do you hate me?/Was it hazing?/For a cruel fraternity I pledged/And I still mean it/Old habits die screaming
Who's Afraid of Little Old Me: … If you wanted me dead, you should've just said/Nothing makes me feel more alive
There you have it, folks!
